Wilberto Nieves-Neira, MD
Dr. Nieves-Neira is an Associate Professor of Gynecologic Oncology at Northwestern Medicine. He is board certified in OB/GYN and Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Nieves-Neira serves as the Associate Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program and has a strong commitment to the education of trainees and his patients.
Dr. Nieves-Neira started his medical education at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He attended Emory University for residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology and completed Gynecologic Oncology fellowship training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2002. He started his academic career as Assistant Professor at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, where he developed the robotic surgery program for the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and trained his oncology peers, general gynecologists and urogynecologists. He spent the previous two years at the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine and the Sylvester Cancer Center concentrating on their didactic teaching and surgical training.
His clinical expertise extends to diagnosis and management of all gynecologic malignancies with special interest in ovarian cancer and cervical cancer. He performed studies in molecular pharmacology at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH) prior to his clinical fellowship training. He manages chemotherapy, clinical trials and palliative care as part of his comprehensive approach to patient care.
His surgical expertise covers a broad spectrum of surgical procedures from minimally invasive and robotic technology assisted surgery to radical operations as needed to address the clinical presentation of various tumors. He continues his teaching endeavors developing simulation strategies and surgical training of fellows and residents.
